On Tuesday November 21st 2017 Clonbullogue Tidy Towns' Committee held a 'River Figile Community Awareness Day' in Clonbullogue Hall. 5th and 6th class were delighted to be invited.
Basil Mannion (Community Water Officer) gave a presentation on the River Figile. Interestingly the river is of moderate quality as it comes into Clonbullogue, but is of good quality as it leaves!
Billy, an ecologist from Clones, told us that 'River Figile' means the 'River of Gabul's Wood' and he told the story of Mad Sweeney who apparently lived in that wood.
After the talks we braved the rain and went for a riverbank walk, where we used a key to identify all sorts of creepy crawlies from the water. We were fascinated to find cadisfly larvae, as they join pebbles and leaves together with thread to make a shelter for themselves.
